About RYIS

The Regional Youth Intervention Specialist (RYIS) program works as part of the over-arching West Virginia Adolescent Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention (ASPEN) program in an effort to reduce the rate of youth suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide deaths in West Virginia. The RYIS will assist in implementing a collaborative and coordinated statewide prevention and intervention effort across the existing public and private service delivery system.

The objectives of the program are:

  • To increase the implementation of suicide prevention evidence-based practices
  • To improve identification, referral, and engagement interventions for youth and transitioning youth aged 10-24
  • To increase the number of youth and youth-serving agencies that implement screening and gatekeeping programs
  • To build the capacity of organizations serving vulnerable sub-populations to effectively deliver coordinated care
  • To provide follow-up services to attempt survivors and their families

  • Individuals who have attempted suicide within the last 6 months.
  • Individuals who have recently been hospitalized for a suicide attempt.
